This module examines the classification of objects in the contexts of everyday (shopping) and scientific (living organisms) applications.

The principles of classification are taught in an everyday context ensuring that students appreciate that classification depends on which criteria are chosen and that there are different, but equally valid ways of classifying objects. Students assess the strengths and weaknesses of different ways of classifying and are taught different ways of communicating classifications through diagrams.

The principles of classification are then explored in the way that scientists classify animals and plants. Students learn the names of some major groups, examples of organisms in each group and the characteristics of the groups.
