This module complements the Thinking Skills module and extends students’ thinking about what we really mean when we say we have learned something. It introduces them to techniques to help them to learn effectively and provides opportunities for them to practise these skills.

Reflecting Bloom’s taxonomy, the module is structured around three broad areas: memorising, performing and understanding, with understanding being the higher cognitive skill.

The techniques involved in memorising and understanding are seen as transferable across subject areas, including science and maths, with little change.

However, skills associated with performing are seen as subject specific. For example, the skills needed to be effective at carrying out science experiments are different from those associated with performing mathematical calculations.
